What is NASDU?

National Association of Security Dog Users

NASDU is the UK trade body for security dog handler units, setting accreditation levels (1-3) for handler skill and dog certification. Level 2 is the practical operating standard for working security dog handlers — combining handler training, dog behavioural assessment, scent / search / patrol work, and ongoing competence reviews. NASDU also runs accreditation for dog handling instructors (Level 3) and for kennel facilities. Most insurance and procurement teams require Level 2 minimum for any security dog deployed on a UK site.

Why it matters

A security dog isn't a pet — they're a working dog that can cause serious injury if the handler is undertrained. NASDU Level 2 certification (current, not lapsed) plus dog-specific public liability insurance is the operating standard. Without it, any incident becomes a serious liability for both provider and buyer.

Questions to ask a provider

  1. What NASDU level does each handler currently hold?
  2. When was each dog last behaviourally assessed?
  3. What public liability insurance covers dog deployments specifically?
