What is ISO 9001?

ISO 9001 — Quality Management Systems

ISO 9001 is the international standard for quality management systems. A certified organisation has documented processes for handling customer requirements, complaints, continuous improvement, internal audit and management review — assessed externally each year. In the UK security industry, ISO 9001 sits alongside (and is partly required by) NSI Gold and SSAIB Gold. Many providers carry ISO 9001 directly even when they don't hold NSI / SSAIB.

Issued by

International Organization for Standardization, certified by UKAS-accredited bodies.

Why it matters

ISO 9001 doesn't tell you anything about a provider's security competence — it tells you they take their own processes seriously. For long-term contracts where service quality and complaint handling matter, it's a useful tie-breaker between two otherwise-equivalent providers.

Questions to ask a provider

  1. Who certified your ISO 9001 (UKAS-accredited body)?
  2. When was your last surveillance audit and were any non-conformances raised?
  3. Can I see your customer feedback / complaint handling process?
