How to Choose the Right Construction Site Security Company

Choosing the wrong security company can cost you dearly — equipment theft, material losses, and delayed handovers are the most common consequences. Here's what every UK project manager needs to check before signing a contract.

1. Check Their SIA Licensing

Every security company operating in the UK must hold an SIA Approved Contractor Scheme (ACS) licence. This is non-negotiable. Ask to see their ACS certificate before you proceed with any commercial discussion.

Individual security officers must also hold a valid SIA licence for their role — whether that's a Security Guard or Door Supervisor licence. Ask the company how they verify this for their staff.

2. Verify Their Accreditations

For construction site security, look for companies holding:

  • CHAS — Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme
  • Constructionline Gold — demonstrates financial stability and compliance
  • SafeContractor — Alcumus SafeContractor SSIP accreditation
  • NSI or SSAIB — for electronic security (CCTV installation and monitoring)

These aren't just badges. They indicate the company has passed independent audits of their management systems, insurance, and working practices.

3. Understand Their Monitoring Capability

Does the company monitor your site's CCTV 24/7, or is the footage only reviewed after an incident? There's a significant difference between:

  • Reactive CCTV — footage is stored and reviewed post-incident
  • Proactive monitoring — a remote monitoring centre watches live feeds and can dispatch response in real time

For high-value construction sites, proactive monitoring is the gold standard.

4. Ask About Their Response Times

What happens when an alarm triggers at 02:00? You need to know:

  • Who responds (their own officers, or a third-party response company)?
  • What's the average response time to your location?
  • How are incidents escalated and reported to you?

Get these answers in writing in your contract.

5. Review Their Insurance

A reputable construction security company should hold:

  • Public Liability Insurance — minimum £5 million is standard
  • Employer's Liability Insurance — minimum £10 million
  • Professional Indemnity Insurance

Ask for certificates of insurance, not just verbal confirmation.

6. Use SitePatrol to Compare Verified Providers

SitePatrol lists verified, SIA-licensed construction site security companies across the UK. You can filter by county, service type, and accreditation. Every provider listed has been reviewed and many have ratings from verified project managers and developers.
